Abstract:

Starting from the self-adjoint variational formulation presented on October 1, we introduce another formulation called mixed variational formulation, in which a concern is given to solving an elliptic BVP as a coupled system of first-order equations rather than a single second-order equation. We discuss so-called primal and dual formulations, show how a mixed formulation can be advantageous in finite element methods.
