Abstract:

One of the "next big things" in technology is teaching computers to
understand natural language in context.  This has applications to
education, security, business, health care, research and many other areas.
Current approaches involve computational linguistics and AI algorithms
which rely on relatively simple mathematics but likely could use some new
mathematical ideas. The speaker will talk about some practical problems of
interest, show related technology,  describe some of the math behind it,
and lead an open discussion. This is non-technical talk meant to stimulate
thought and present opportunities.  (We might also see how everyone does
on a middle school math game.)
