Abstract:

This talk ties to previous week's presentation by Ralph Showalter and to our work on a methane hydrates model joint with Ralph Showalter, Nathan Gibson, and Patricia Medina. We first discuss a particular model evolution equation with an "elbow" constraint and discuss the challenges of its numerical approximation. Then we introduce a more complex model describing methane hydrate evolution which fits in the same general framework. In particular, we present details of semismooth Newton solver that works extremely well for this problem, as well as discuss the convergence of the numerical scheme.
