The subject of this talk is the modeling of the upwelling of the Malvinas current off the shore of Argentina. I will describe recent work of Ricardo Matano (COAS OSU) and Elvio Palma (Univ Bahia Blanca - Argentina). A particular aspect of the modeling used in their work is the study of a diffusion equation with discontinuous diffusion coefficient. This particular feature makes connections with work done in collaboration with Thilanka Appuhamillage, Vrushali Bokil, Roy Haggerty (Geosciences OSU), Jorge Ramirez, Ed Waymire and Brian Wood (CBEE - OSU) in the context of dispersion in layered media. However the questions naturally posed by the oceanographic applications present
new challenges in our understanding of the properties of the solutions of these problems.
