Congratulations to Professor Malgo Peszynska who was recently elected President of the Pacific Northwest Section of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM PNW).
Mathematics at Oregon State University continues to have a strong presence in the SIAM PNW. SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) is a major professional organization with over 14000 members from all over the world engaged professionally in the field of applied and computational Mathematics. The purpose of SIAM PNW Section is to bring together the different communities of the Pacific Northwest that are active in this field, and to promote collaboration for both basic research and applications of mathematics to industry and science.
Our department has had a very strong presence in SIAM PNW since its inception in 2016; we provided the largest number of signatures from any of the PNW institutions needed to establish the Section! We also organized the first biennial SIAM PNW conference in October 2017, which featured over 150 participants from the region; the participation and work of several OSU mathematics faculty and student volunteers was a key to its success. The SIAM PNW section also features quarterly online seminars with distinguished speakers; the seminars can be attended online. Due to their popularity, local participants at OSU Mathematics, including graduate students in Applied Mathematics, gather together in a room for viewing these talks.
