Common registration errors

"Prerequisite not yet met" registration error

The Math Department enforces prerequisites, at C- or better (with few exceptions), for all MTH courses. Learn more about course prerequisites, including the math placement score required.

  • If you believe you have met the prerequisite, but are receiving a "Prerequisite not yet met" registration error, request a prerequisite override (e.g. C- or better in MTH 112, required to take MTH 251).
  • If you took the ALEKS math placement test today, your test score may not yet be in the system. The scores are loaded twice daily, at 7:30am and 3:45pm. You should be able to register for your math class either after 3:45pm today or after 7:30am tomorrow.

"Department Approval Required" registration error

This indicates that you are attempting to register for a section restricted only to students in the Educational Opportunities Program (EOP); if you are not in this program, you will need department approval to register for that particular section (please contact EOP). These sections all have a section number of the form 09X.

  • If you are using Schedule Planner, you may filter out these sections from the generated schedules as follows: click the gear icon (next to “Sections” in your list of courses), then uncheck all the sections with a 09X section numbers, and finally generate schedules.
  • If you are not using Schedule Planner, you may refer to the course catalog to find a lecture section and a linked recitation (listed directly below the lecture section in the catalog) and attempt registration again.

"Level Restriction" registration error

This indicates that you are attempting to register for a section restricted only to students in the INTO OSU program; if you are not in this program, you will not be allowed to register for that particular section. These sections all have a section number of the form 65X.

  • If you are using Schedule Planner, you may filter out these sections from the generated schedules as follows: click the gear icon (next to “Sections” in your list of courses), then uncheck all the sections with a 65X section numbers, and finally generate schedules.
  • If you are not using Schedule Planner, you may refer to the course catalog to find a lecture section and a linked recitation (listed directly below the lecture section in the catalog) and attempt registration again.

Please discuss your situation with your academic advisor and then, if she/he approves, complete this web form. Please also submit your transcript showing the prerequisite course and grade (a screenshot of an unofficial transcript or a grade report will suffice).

Most MTH classes have both a lecture section and a recitation section. You need to simultaneously input both CRN’s—one for the lecture and one for a linked recitation (these are listed directly below the lecture section in the catalog).

It is probably the evening midterm time that presents a time conflict. If that is the case, you may be able to obtain a registration override, but only with instructor approval.

Please print this form and complete ALL sections. Then request that your instructor sign (be sure she/he also indicates the TIM (time conflict) override code).

The Mathematics Department Does NOT recommend this course of action. If you attempt this and fail, you have lost your seat in the class. We are NOT able to force your registration at that time.

Switching classes is a rather specific process, please follow these instructions carefully.

    1. Locate the CRN number for the new recitation section you want to register for. Make sure it is a recitation corresponding to the same lecture that you are in.
    2. Use the "Add/Drop Classes" menu in your Student Services Menu (not the "Look Up Classes to Add" menu).
    3. Select “Drop” for the RECITATION section only (NOT the lecture)
    4. DO NOT SUBMIT CHANGES YET!
    5. Scroll down to the "Add Class Worksheet" and manually input the CRN for the new recitation section you want.
    6. Press the "Submit Changes" button.

Remember not to touch the lecture section!

You may be able to get into a closed section.

If it is before week 2 of the term:

    • Please add yourself to the waiting list of the recitation section that fits your schedule (NOTE: you must choose a recitation that is linked to the lecture you want; these are listed directly below the lecture in the catalog).
    • Waiting lists are maintained through the recitation section—if you’re on the waiting list for the recitation, you are automatically also on the waiting list for the linked lecture section.
    • Then, be sure to check your email daily—once a seat opens in a class, you’ll be notified and have 24 hours to register.

If it is during week 2 of the term:

    • Waiting lists are maintained through the first week of the term. After that, you may still be able to get into a closed section, but only with instructor approval.
    • Please print this form and complete ALL sections. Then request that your instructor sign (be sure she/he also indicates all appropriate override codes).
    • Finally, bring your signed form to the Department of Mathematics office in 368 KIDD.
