Ralph E. Showalter
Ralph E. Showalter
Biography
Ralph Showalter retired in 2003 as Blumberg Centennial Professor Emeritus in Mathematics from The University of Texas at Austin, where he was a founding member of ICES, now the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences, and he joined Oregon State University as Professor of Mathematics. Previously he held visiting positions at Purdue University, VPI & State University, University of Augsburg, and Brown University. He has published over 100 research papers, served as referee for 20 research journals, and he is a member of the editorial boards of ten journals; he has supervised 22 Ph.D. dissertations.
Research
His research interests include singular or degenerate nonlinear evolution equations and partial differential equations, variational inequalities, free-boundary problems, and related applications to initial-boundary-value problems of mechanics and diffusion. Current work is focused on the development of mathematical models of coupled fluid-solid dynamics, deformable porous media, and upscaled models of transport and flow in heterogeneous media.
